The 4x4x2 Strategy

Updated: Aug 22, 2021

Someone asked us recently:

“What would you two do with 40 dollars to spend on property in Earth 2(E2)?”

We don’t give investment advice. Especially not on Metaverses: they are big-time risky. The rest of this article should be read with this in mind (we are NOT advising you to follow our strategy). Please remember this before you read on!

But it's a good question… And here’s how we answered (after we gave our disclaimer ;)): it’s what we call our 4x4x2 strategy: a block of four tiles, in four different kinds of locations on the map, twice.

The 4x4x2 strategy.

Why 4x4x2?

What this strategy achieves is diversity across enough types of property to both, keep our attention and spread risk. At the same time, crucially, it gives us a chance to grow our portfolios.

No one knows for sure what the most valuable assets are going to be in E2 yet. Despite increasing announcements from devs on the activities that are going to be made available in and where (resources, essence, coins), we’re also aware that value will be generated by where people will go in the game to play. The devs can’t control that in the same way as resources and buildings. So having a broad range of types of location, within a budget is a good idea.

When it comes to property size, with tiles across many Metaverses based on Mapbox's 10m x 10m sizing, buying a block of four tiles, means 20m x 20m, or 400sqm in total to play with, build on, or scrape resources from - perfectly reasonable if Metaverses are to become the Ready Player One reality many people hope for.

The final thing is separating out properties: one to grow, one to build and play. That’s why 4x4x2… the x2 bit gives us an option to cash in on one property if our property play pays off.

How we’d do it:

Find four different types of location that fit within our budget. We would go for:

  • A major city – this gives real-life footfall for AR users.

  • A Megacity – this gives in-game footfall for VR/in-game users.

  • A place where we hope to find resources – this unlocks revenue or materials to build.

  • A place that feeds our passion – this keeps interest, and maybe we retire there ;)

In each of these, we’d buy a four square lot, twice (8 squares in total, divided into two unique properties; it’s important not to forget to buy these one after another in two separate transactions, as users can’t subdivide properties in E2 yet).

Walk-though

Let’s go to an example.

BIG CITY

First, we would find a big city. We’ve gone for Amman, Jordan. Why? Because it’s still cheap and busy. Plus, there’s a couple of 4 tile spots close to the amazing and ancient Citadel right in the middle of the sprawl.

Cost: USD2.56 per plot

= USD5.12 (0.64 per tile)

MEGACITY

Next is our choice of Megacity, and we’ve gone for Zigurat, which sits out on a peninsula in Western Sahara. This city still has tiles available in the resources district - so maybe we get lucky and pick up some resources with our megacity tiles as we go.

Then we’ve picked a second spot of four tiles close by.

Cost: USD5.93 per plot

= USD11.86 (1.48 per tile)

RESOURCES

Now resources. A lot of the mined resources are gone now in the game, and what’s left can be hard to find. Therefore, we would probably see it as a toss-up between a wooded area, and a fresh water source. Given that we love trees and see them as crucial partners in the fight against climate change, and don’t want to cut our buddies down, we’re going for some water. And we found it in the middle of Lake Volta in Ghana.

For water, we would go for a configuration of the two properties like this, interconnected, and touching land. We honestly don’t know why right now, but it just feels right to retain a link to land whilst we don’t know what the devs have planned for water resources (and gameplay in/on/under water right now).

Cost: USD6.77 per plot

= USD13.54 (0.85 per tile)

PASSION

Finally, the passion project. The fun part. Here’s where we can get really creative and buy something to imagine being in for hours and hours, within the game. We found one spot that’s truly spectacular, but that’s for another time (;)).

Something that has a story, a why. For some this will be mountains, a favourite park, or their old family home. For us, we went for a spot in the mountains in the Himalayas. Simply because we’ve both been there and they’re incredible, and we love the high places on this earth.

This one has the added benefit of potentially providing water resources in the future. Plenty of availability at the top of the world, so nothing to worry about there.

Cost: USD5.32 per plot

= USD10.62 (1.33 per tile)

Total cost = USD34.40

Four tiles, four types of locations, twice. And well under budget, even banking a few dollars to play with later in the game, if something takes our fancy. Maybe we’ll just build a fatter pad.

So that’s how we do it: 4x4x2. Although this is not in anyway investment advice (and you should be aware of just how risky an investment in any metaverse platform really is right now) if we just had 40 bucks*, this would be our strategy. We think this would give us a chance and keep our interest in E2.

*Actually, it was under 35 bucks.
